Computer is an Advance electronics device which accepts input through different input devices like (keyboard, mouse) Then Process it and produce suitable output Result.
HISTORY OF COMPUTER
The first calculating device is Abacus which was developed in china nearly 2000 to 4000 years ago. Then later on firs computer was developed by Charles Babbage named as difference engine. Since he is known as father of computer and the first programmer was his assistant lady Augusta Ada Lovelace. Who develop first program for Babbage’s computer so she is also called mother of computer.

- Automatic :–
Computer is automatic machine because once computer started the job until it is finished computer work itself.
- Diligence :-
The capacity of doing repeated work with same speed is called diligence. Computer performs tasks with same speed and accuracy without getting tired.
- Storage :-
The computer can store a huge amount of data.
- Accuracy :-
Computer is 100% accurate machine. Computer never makes mistake so the mistake is done by human or user.
- Versatility :-
Computer is perfect in each and every field of life. So it is called versatile machine.
- Speed :-
A computer is very fast device because Computer process data at high speed. The speed of computer is measured in Pico second (10-12 of a second) it means one billionth part of a second.
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER
The computer may be solving a particular kind of problem or general purpose. The Computers are different types on work, size, Operation and brand.

- Hybrid computer
- Analog computer: – That type of computer, which process analog signal or regular and continuous signal is called analog computer. E.g.:- analog Speedometer and Analog watch etc.

There are also three types of computer on the basic of brand.
- IBM PC (International Business Machine Personal Computer):-
IBM PC is that computer which is developed by IBM
Company. It is also called branded computer.
- IBM Compatible (International Business Machine Computable:-
It is not developed by IBM computer but the design is similar to IBM Computer is called IBM Compatible. it is also called assembled computer.
- Apple/Macintosh Computer :-
Apple computer is manufactured by Apple Company. Apple computer’s hardware and software is its own type. It is also branded computer.
ON THE BASIS OF SIZE
- Super Computer :-
It is most expensive computer in the world. it is very fast computer which works with speed of Pico second or femto second.
- Mainframe Computer :-
It is less expensive than super computer. It is very fast computer. Which is used control satellites and big servers.
- Mini Computer :-
It is less expensive less powerful than Mainframe computer. It is generally used for ISP server and railway, airlines reservation.
- Micro Computer :-
It is cheaper computer than other computer. It is generally used in small office , home, school, hospital etc. for general purpose.

- Server Computer
Server compute is those computer which handles other client computes. It provides permission to client computers.
- Client Computer
Client compute is those computer which woks under server
compute. according to permission of server it works.
COMPUTER GENERATION
Generation of computer took place in five distinct stages based on technology made of, functioning and size.
There are totally five computer generation known till today Given below.
- First generation of computer(1942-1954):-
The computer used vacuum tubes as memory or storage media is known as first generation computer. For e.g. ENIAC, EDVAC, EDSAC, UNIVAC, IBM-701 etc.
- Second Generation computer(1955-1964) :-
The second generation computer were manufactured using transistors instead of vacuum tubes. It is faster and smaller than first generation computer. For e.g. IBM 1620, IBM 7090, CDC 1604, etc.
- Third generation computer(1965-1974) :-
It is made of IC instead of Transistor. it is smaller and faster than second generation of computer. For e.g. IBM/370 series, CDC 7600, STAR-100 etc.
- Fourth generation computer (1975-1989) :-
It is build with microprocessor. The development of microprocessor contains all circuits needed to perform arithmetic logic and control functions. For eg. IBM PCs, ACER, Gateway, Apple etc.
- Fifth generation computer (1990-future) :-
It is under development stage. This computer will use Ultra Large Scale Integration (ULSI), Bio-chip. It will use intelligent programming and improved human machine interfaces. It contains AI (artificial Intelligence) with little thinking capabilities. And it will understand natural language like English, Japanese etc.
MAIN UNITS OF COMPUTER
- INPUT UNITS: – That type of unit of computer, which helps us to insert the data or instruction into Computer. E.g. :- Mouse, Keyboard, Scanner,web cam etc
- KEYBOARD:-Keyboard is an input device of computer, which can helps us to insert the data or command inside the computer.
There are three types of keyboard:-
- XT keyboard (Extended Technology Keyboard): – It has (86-92) keys.
- AT keyboard (Advanced Technology Keyboard): – It has (92-102) keys.
- ENHASED keyboard : – It has more than 102 keys.

- ENTER KEY : – It is used to change the line, paragraph, after cursor.
- DELETE: –It is used to erase the letter from right position of cursor.
- SPACE BAR: – It creates the blanks space.
- BACK SPACE :– It erases the letter from left position of cursor.
- Esc: – It is used to cancel the dialog box.
- TAB: – It is used to move the cursor more than one character.
- ↓ : – It is called down arrow key. & used to move cursor down.
- ↑ : – It is called up arrow key. & used to move cursor down.
- ← : -It is right arrow key. & used to move cursor One character right.
- → : – It is left arrow key. & used to move cursor One character left.
- PAGE UP : – It moves the cursor one pages up.
- PAGE DOWN: – It moves the cursor one pages down.
- HOME : –It moves the cursor at the beginning of current line.
- END : – It moves the cursor at the end of current line.
- Windows key : – It opens the start menu.
- Application key : – It opens the application box.
- MOUSE : – Mouse is an input device, which can helps us to insert the data or program inside the computer. It has generally three buttons and one ball. It has also a mouse pointer, which indicates the position of mouse.
- OUTPUT UNITS : – Those unit of computer, which can helps us to get the results, is Known as output unit. E.g.: – Monitor, Speaker and Printer etc.
- PRINTER: – Printer is an output device of computer, which helps the user to get a hard copy of any document. There are various types of printers on their size and quality of printing. Some printers are slow and noisy where as some are fast and quiet.
- MONITOR: – Monitors are the output devices of computer. The data and instruction given to the computer through keyboard or through any input device can be seen on the monitor or VDU (Visual Display Unit). They are various size and model.
- MEMORY UNIT: – That type of unit of computer, which helps us to store the data & Program, is called as Memory Unit.
- CPU: – It stands for Central Processing Unit. It is the main brain of the Computer. It controls all the peripherals and does the processing tasks. It has three sections CU (Control unit), ALU (Arithmetic Logical Unit) and MU (Memory unit).

The collection of alphabetic is called data. In other word, Data is the raw material of computer. There are five types of data. They are as following: –
1. Text data : – The collection of alphabetic and number is called
text data. E. g: -A to Z and 0 to 9 so on.
2. Graphic data: – The collection of picture or image is called graphic data.
- Audio data : – The collection of sound is called audio data.
- Video data : – The combination of sound(Audio data) and picture (graphic data) is called Video data.
- Program data : – The collection of software is called program data. It is most important data to operate other data.

DATA STORAGE DEVICE
- FLOPPY DISK: – Floppy disk is an storage device, which is used to store the data or information. It can store only 1.44 MB of data
- CD-ROM: – It stands for Compact Disk Read Only Memory, where we can store 700 MB of data. It is made by platinum metal. It can store the data permanently.
- HARD DISK: – This is big data storage device, where we can store the data. It can store 20 GB, 40 GB, 80 GB, 160 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB Large etc. It is situated inside the CPU. This is permanently data storage device.
MAIN FIELD OF COMPUTER
HARDWARE: – The physical parts or components of computer are called Hardware. Whatever we can touch and seen are known as computer hardware. Some example of computer Hardware is Keyboard, Monitor, CPU, Mouse, Disk Drives and Internal Devices such as motherboard etc.
SOFTWARE: – Software is collection of programs and (programs means a series of one or more instruction), which helps the computer hardware to work. There are three types of software. They are following:-
- System software
- Application software
- Utility software
- System software: – System software, which controls the computer system, is known as system software. There are so many type of system software: MS-DOS, Windows, vista, linus etc.
- Application: – That type of software, which is used to solve the user-defined problem, is known as application software. There are so many types of application software. They are as following: – Ms- Word, Ms-Excel, Ms-PowerPoint, adobe PageMaker, adobe PhotoShop. etc.
- Utility software: – That types of software, which can used to solve the computer’s problem. Such as Preparing new disk, Disk format etc.
MEMORY
Memory is basically storage device, which can helps us to store our data or information. There are two types of memory.
- Primary Memory
- Secondary Memory
- PRIMARY MEMORY: – The memory, which built inside the chip and store the data or instruction temporary is known as primary memory. It is also known as internal memory. There are two types of Primary Memory.
- RAM: – It stands for Random Access Memory. In this type or memory, we can read as well as we write anything into them. This type of memory is volatile memory. Because their contents are lost as power supply is turned off.
- ROM: – It stands for Read Only Memory. In these types of memory, we can read only. But we can’t write anything inside it. This type of memory is permanent. So their contents don’t get wiped out.
- SECONDARY MEMORY: – The memory, which built outside the motherboard and stores the data or instruction permanently is known as external memory. There are two types of secondary memory: –

OPERATING SYSTEM (OS)
Operating system is system software which coordinates and controls whole function of a computer. It provides interface between user and hardware. When a computer is turned on it searches for instructions (instructions are a special program to boot the computer) in its memory. These instructions tell the computer how to start upIt is most important program that runs a computer. Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.

It stands for Disk Operating System. The term DOS can refer to any operating system. It is one type of single user single tasking operating system, which developed by Microsoft Company of USA. So it is called as MS-DOS. Here, we can follow some commands. Its executable name is
FILE
A file is the collection of related information. The information may be any type of letter document, bills to database management. The file must have name. The filename have certain rules.
- A filename can’t accept more than eight characters.
- Blank spaces in the filename are not permitted.
- “A” to “Z” and “0” to “9” are allowed.
- Filename can be typed capital letter or small letters.
- The file may contain an extension name, which may have three characters after dot (.).
- The extension of the filename is separated.
DIRECTORY
Directory is the table of files. The files may be any size. The directory contains filename, it’s size, date, and time creation. The directory also contains sub-directory. There are two types of directory. They are as follows: –
- Root Directory
- Sub Directory
COMMAND
Command is an instruction to computer to perform a certain operation or set of operation. There are two types of command. They are as follow: –
- INTERNAL COMMAND: –
That types of command, which are present inside command.com file, are called as internal command. E.g.: – CLS, DATE, TIME, VER, COPY CON, MD, CD, RD, DEL, VOL and TYPE etc.
- EXTERNAL COMMAND: –
That type of command, which has individual file, is called as external command. E.g.: – FORMAT, LABEL, PROMPT, MORE, TREE, CHKDSK, DELTREE and FDISK etc.
How to open MS-DOS?
- First Method:
- Click on Start menu.
- Click on Run.
- Type COMMAND.COM in Open box.
- Click on Ok.Second Method:

- Click on Program.
- Click on MS-DOS Prompt.

- Right click on Ms-Dos Prompt icon.

CD\ COMMAND
It is an internal command. It is used to close the all directories.

It is an internal command. It is used to close the MS-DOS screen.

CLS COMMAND
It stands for Clear Screen. It is used to clear the screen.
Example: –

DATE COMMAND
It is also an internal command. It is used to display current date of system. It is also used to modify the date of system.

This command is used to display the current time of system and also it is used to change the current time.

It stands for Volume. It is used to display the volume name and volume serial number of given drive.
Example: –

VER COMMAND
It stands for Version Command. This command is used to display the version number of current windows.
Example: –
C:\>VER

DIR COMMAND
This command is used to display the list of the entire directories and files name with their size, creation date and time also.
Example: – C:\>DIR
- MD COMMAND: – It stands for make Directory Command. It is an internal command. This command is used to make a new directory and subdirectory.
Syntax: – C:\>MD [DIRECTORY NAME]
Example: -C:\>MD FIT
- CD\ : – It closes the directory and sub directory at a time.
- CD. . : – It closes the directory one by one.
- RD COMMAND: – It stands for Remove Directory Command. It is used to remove the empty directory and subdirectory.
Syntax:- C:\>RD [DIRECTORY NAME]
Example: -C:\>RD FIT
- CD COMMAND: – It stands for Change Directory Command. It is used to open and close the directory and subdirectory.
Syntax for open dorectory

This command is used to delete the text file generally.

LABEL COMMAND
It is used to display the volume label name, volume serial number and also used to create, delete, and change the volume label name of required drive.
Example: -C:\>LABEL
